Experts believe that the inspiration for Tolkien’s legendary Middle Earth tomes, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, were all taken from this spectacular region in Switzerland. The Alpine villages are all protected by the famed Jungfrau peak. For years hikers have been visiting these valleys in hopes of recreating the Lord of the Rings experience and here up in Wengen, only accessible by foot or train I felt like I was standing in Rivendell itself looking down over the valley and all it’s waterfalls. How to reach Wengen ⬇️ Wengen can be reached by train only. Drivers can park in the garage in Lauterbrunnen (paid) and take the cogwheel train up to Wengen. The ride takes about 15 minutes. Train travelers travel to Lauterbrunnen and switch for Wengen there. Travel by train if you can. You will save on parking costs, and you won’t be needing a car to explore the region anyway. How to get around the area From Wengen, there are trains back down to Lauterbrunnen and further up the mountain to Kleine Scheidegg and eventually Jungfraujoch. From Lauterbrunnen, you can continue to Interlaken and other parts of the Bernese Oberland and Switzerland. From Kleine Scheidegg, you can take another train to reach Grindelwald. There’s also a cableway up to Männlichen. Several hiking routes start there, and there’s a gondola down to Grindelwald as well. In winter, many ski lifts make sure you can reach the more than 200 km of pistes in the Jungfrau region.
